Ke’ala’iliahi 2008

This past weekend we attended the ho’olaule’a of Halau Kekuaokala’au’ala’iliahi. There was ono food, lots of crafts and wonderful entertainment.

Husband and wife team of Joy Haunani and Brandon ‘Iliahi Paredes are na kumu. Both are exceptional hula dancers and just great people….we love them!
There was lots of beautiful hula.

My sister Lisa dances in the halau and is getting to be quite the hula dancer!
When we were young, I always wanted to dance hula but our parents felt music was more important and sent us to accordian lessons (I really let the secret out on that one!). I learned to read music early and almost majored in it until I found out how difficult it was for me to write music and sing on key.
I was so happy when I finally got to dance hula and am glad that my sister is finding the same.

I don’t know who this little one is but I just couldn’t resist taking her picture. She couldn’t have been more than 3 years old. Holunape was playing music and she must have been moved to get up and dance hula. Absolutely adorable with her little lauhala hat and Ni’ihau earrings.
